Redevelopment plans for former Oak Ridge Mall site move forward

Plans to redevelop the former Oak Ridge Mall continue to move forward.

North Carolina-based developer Crosland Southeast announced plans Tuesday to name the mixed-use project "Main Street Oak Ridge."

Plans call for existing retail anchors Belk, JC Penney, Cinemark Theaters, and Super Walmart to remain on the property and receive a facelift. The project will add new national retail stores and restaurants, along with a 150 multi-family home residential area, a Class-A office building, and a hotel.

Citizens step up to save man from fiery crash

(WBIR- Oak Ridge) A group of people stepped up to save a man from a fiery car crash in Oak Ridge over the weekend.

Oak Ridge Police Department said a van went off the road on Oak Ridge Turnpike and hit an above ground natural gas pipeline around 1:45 p.m. Saturday, which then started a gas line fire.

Oak Ridge resident Daniel Mealer said he was driving westbound on Oak Ridge Turnpike when he spotted the gas fire.

Two bystanders help rescue man from fiery car crash

Update Saturday 7 p.m.
The Oak Ridge Police Department said two bystanders risked their lives to help pull a man out of a fiery wreck to safety.

Police said a van went off the road on Oak Ridge Turnpike and hit an above ground natural gas pipeline around 1:45 p.m. Saturday.

The crash then sparked a gas line fire.

Animal Control Officer Sara Walter was working a nearby event at the time of the crash. Police said she, along with a bystander named Danny Mealer, ran over to help.

Erin Corwin's family to hold candlelight vigil tonight

The family of Erin Corwin has organized a candlelight vigil in her honor on Friday night.

The vigil will be held at the East Tennessee Riding Club at 470 Tuskegee Drive in Oak Ridge. The event is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.

Corwin, 19, was a Marine wife who vanished on June 28 after she left her home in California. Seven weeks after her disappearance, a cave rescue team found her body in an unmapped gold mine in the desert in California.

3 injured when truck crashed into Oak Ridge Waffle House

Three people were injured when a truck crashed into an Oak Ridge Waffle House Friday afternoon.

According to Sgt. Jeremy Huddleston with Oak Ridge Police, a white Ford Ranger drove into the back of the building just after noon. The impact sent debris flying through the air, which hit at least three people.

Oak Ridge Fire Chief Darryl Kerley said only one of the three people who were hurt were transported to the hospital. The driver was treated for injuries on the scene.

Officials: Leak from radioactive pool at ORNL poses no threat

A small leak at a reactor pool at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory poses no radiation threat to the public, according to officials.

Allen Schubert, Manager of Communications for UCOR, the environmental cleanup contractor for the DOE reservation, told 10News that the water leaking from the containment pool "is of little or low radioactivity and is contained to the building."

Anderson Co. sheriff's deputy arrested for DUI

An Anderson County sheriff's deputy was arrested early Friday morning for driving under the influence.

A police officer found Roger Day and another passenger with a motorcycle that had fallen over. Police say that Day smelled like alcohol.

Police performed several sobriety tests, but Day eventually refused any more and was arrested. He is out on $1,500 bond.

Day has worked with the sheriff's office since 2002, and is on unpaid administrative leave while the department investigates.
