Violent sex offender accused of stealing church mail
News

A violent sex offender has returned to jail after police say he stole mail from an Oak Ridge church, which also serves as a daycare.

Heritage Fellowship Church told Oak Ridge police Tuesday morning that Gregory Scott Tyree, 47, was stealing the church's mail.

The same day that the church made the report, an officer pulled over and arrested Tyree on Robertsville Road near Willowbrook Elementary School. On the same road, across from Robertsville Middle School, officers recovered evidence linking Tyree to the crime.

After the arrest, police realized that Tyree was convicted of aggravated rape and sexual battery more than 20 years ago. Since he's a sex offender, Tyree wasn't supposed to be near a daycare or school.

Heritage Fellowship Church has a daycare center with a playground that's clearly visible.

Officials arrested Tyree for misdemeanor theft and violating sex offender registry laws.
