Local club gives free eye exams to hundreds in East TN
News

A local club partnered with a non-profit to give the gift of sight to an East Tennessee community.

Lions Club teamed up with Remote Area Medical Clinic to give free eye exams and frame fitting to people at a senior-living facility in Clinton. The club has been behind this effort for the past 18 months, giving away almost 700 pairs of eyeglasses.

Ron Reihn, Lions Club coordinator, said without the clinic, the people they serve wouldn't get this type of care.

"Even with the more liberalized healthcare - the Obamacare or what have you - there's nothing for eyeglasses. There just isn't," said Reihn. "So for the working man who can't afford personal insurance and can't afford eyeglasses and needs them desperately. . . there just isn't very many options for him to go to."

The club couldn't serve everyone who came out Wednesday, but will return soon to help them.

People need to make an appointment to sign up for exams. Register by contacting your local Lions Club.
