Y-12 retirees protest benefit changes

(WBIR) More than 100 people gathered outside the Y-12 National Security Complex today to protest changes to their retirement benefits.

The group said Consolidated Nuclear Security is implementing a new health package for retirees starting January first. CNS began operating at Y-12 in July.

One protester we talked to worked at the complex for almost 34-years. Betty Hatmaker said right now, her health plan covers everything but co-pays.

But starting in the new year, she'll have high deductibles and high co-pays.

Hatmaker said the plant is offering older retirees a supplemental policy. But she says that's not enough.

"If they're on very many medications, they're going to he hitting what we call the 'donut hole' and they're going to have to choose between food and buying their medicines," Hatmaker said.

Hatmaker also said she has not received a cost of living adjustment on her pension payments since 2001.
