Big future planned for Oak Ridge Mall area

The city of Oak Ridge is moving forward with plans to redevelop the Oak Ridge Mall area.

Developers and city leaders met Tuesday morning to outline their plans.

Crews will tear down everything except the Belk and J-C Penney stores. In its place, Oak Ridge will build a town center-type development called "Main Street Oak Ridge." It will include retail, restaurant and maybe even residential space.

Leaders say these types of developments are the way of the future.

"You don't have all the interior, common area maintenance cost. It's typically more convenient for shoppers who are able to get closer to their store or restaurant destination, and once again a better sense of feel, a better sense of place, better opportunities for community gathering," said

The city says it has already leased about 75% of the retail space.

Demolition is expected to start early next year.

Leaders hope to have "Main Street Oak Ridge" open to shoppers by mid to late 2016.
