(WBIR) Revitalization efforts for Jackson Square in Oak Ridge took a step forward Monday. The city council awarded a bid to move forward on improvements to the historic district.

The city received a $1 million grant from the state back in 2012 and they've been taking steps to start construction.

City officials say the construction will improve traffic flow in the area. They're also looking to add a splash pad for kids and make the area more easily accessible for people with disabilities.

City council member Chuck Hope says he thinks these changes will help boost business in the area.

"It's vitally important that we look at building those existing shopping centers and shopping areas. Retail in Oak ridge is one of those things that we're always looking to improve and that's why we looked at the enhancement grant," he said.

The city will pay for 20 percent of the costs; the state will cover the other 80.

The council also improved a traffic safety grant. Money from that grant will pay for new radar guns and other tools city council says will help crack down on speeders.
