Oak Ridge Schools revert to old bus routes

The Oak Ridge School Board came to a compromise with concerned parents about school bus walk zones.

The problem stemmed from the new one and a half mile walking zone. That means Oak Ridge students living within that radius have to find their own way to school.

Monday evening, several protesters held signs outside the school board meeting calling for an end to the walk zones. It's a battle Laurie Pane has fought before. Her daughter died in 2007 while riding her bike home from school. At the time, they lived within the zone too close to get the bus service.

"In an effort to try and spare another family the grief I have gone through, my whole family has gone through, you know I'm here fighting for everybody's kids," Pane said.

In response to the concern, the board decided Monday night to take $300,000 from its funds, usually used for emergencies, and put buses back on last year's routes. The board said that money will only cover this school year, and it will use this year to come up with a better plan.
