Oak Ridge BOE exploring outsourcing certain faculty

Dozens packed the Oak Ridge board of education meeting Monday night to discuss the future of the district's substitute teachers and teaching assistants.

The school board is considering outsourcing those positions to a company called Professional Education Services.

According to the board of education chairman, the district is considering the move because of changes under the Affordable Care Act.

Leaders say the district can not afford to cover the health insurance, benefits, and liability insurance for teachers' assistants and substitutes.

They say outsourcing the jobs would allow the management company to cover the expenses and save the district money.

But opponents are worried about losing their jobs and how the outsourcing company will manage positions.

The district says similar plans have worked in the cafeteria and on school buses.

The school would still pay for full-time faculty members.

Monday marked only the early talks about the plan. The district hasn't yet made a decision.
