UCOR cuts 41 jobs at Manhattan Project cleanup

Dozens of people are out of a job in Oak Ridge where crews continue the demolition and clean-up of a historic Manhattan Project site.

Wayne McKinney with Department of Energy contractor UCOR announced 41 "position reductions" in its subcontractor workforce.  Of those 41 positions, 35 were working on the clean-up of the historic K-25 uranium enrichment plant that was during the Manhattan Project in World War II.  Six of the laid off workers were assigned to prepare the K-27 demolition project.

A sad reality of exotic pet ownership is the pets grow up. If owners can't take of them then they often end up being put down.

An East Tennessee rescue facility is a forever home for these animals.

"I would like to have zoo. Clinton needs a zoo," James Cox said.

That's how James Cox decided to start the Little Ponderosa Zoo and Rescue 22 years ago with rescue animals.

He doesn't buy or breed.

Norris City Council approves property annexation

The city of Norris is a little bit bigger after a vote by city council.

Sunday night we told you about John Alvis and his business Sleepy Eyed Johns, which sits on Highway 61 in the community of Bethel in Anderson County.

Monday evening, the Norris City Council voted four to one to annex his property and a veterinarian's office right next door.

B&W Y-12 hires new chief operating officer

There's new leadership at the Y-12 Security Complex in Oak Ridge. The contractor B&W Y-12 has named Joe Henry chief operating officer.

Y-12 says the position is new, and Henry will help with overall site management with a focus in operations. He'll be in the position temporarily over the next few months.

In July, the complex was the site of a break-in by protesters that led federal officials to temporarily stop all nuclear activities there.

New Kroger Marketplace may be coming to Oak Ridge

Oak Ridge's busiest intersection may soon get a little busier.

Final plans are underway for a new Kroger Marketplace.

The proposed location is at the corner of Oak Ridge Turnpike and Illinois Avenue.  The site would also have about 12-thousand square feet for small shop space. 

Contractors and officials will propose the site plan to the city's planning commission in the next few days.

City officials will likely consider the new store at its September 28 meeting.  Then, the city council would have to sign off.

Market House restaurant opens in Oak Ridge

Market House restaurant opens in Oak Ridge

The Market House, a restaurant that designs its seasonal menu around fresh, local products, has opened at Jackson Square in Oak Ridge.

Some of their suppliers include Cruze Dairy, Mother Earth Meats and Sweetwater Valley Farms.

A few things on the menu include Secret City chicken salad and a variety of burgers.

One of the co-owners says it's a great spot for a restaurant.

"We looked at a number of different places and we really liked the community out here. He like the building and it's just a perfect fit for us," said Bo Shipley.
